What Actually Happens During a Reiki Session

Back to Blog

One of the most common things I hear from new clients is, "I'm curious about reiki, but I have no idea what actually happens." I love this question, because it gives me a chance to demystify something that can feel unfamiliar but is actually beautifully simple.

Before Your Session

When you arrive, we'll sit together for a few minutes and talk. I want to understand what's going on in your life — what brought you here, what you're feeling in your body, and what you're hoping to experience. There's no wrong answer. Some people come for physical pain, others for emotional support, and many simply because they feel called to try it.

You'll stay fully clothed and lie down on a comfortable massage table. I'll cover you with a blanket, put on soft music, and dim the lights.

During the Session

I'll place my hands lightly on or just above different areas of your body, starting at your head and moving down. I follow the traditional Usui hand positions, which correspond to the major chakras and energy centers, but I also let my intuition guide me to areas that need attention.

What will you feel? Everyone's experience is different. Common sensations include warmth or tingling in the hands, a feeling of deep relaxation (many people fall asleep), gentle waves of emotion, or subtle shifts in energy. Some people see colors behind their closed eyes. Others feel nothing physical but notice a profound sense of peace afterward.

There's no right or wrong experience. The energy goes where it needs to go.

After Your Session

When we finish, I'll give you a few moments to slowly come back. We'll talk about what came up — I may share any intuitive impressions I received, and you can share your experience. I'll offer suggestions for self-care in the hours and days following your session.

Most people feel deeply relaxed, clear-headed, and lighter after a session. Some notice shifts continuing for several days as the energy integrates. I always recommend drinking plenty of water and being gentle with yourself.

Reiki isn't about believing in anything. It's about being open to receiving. If you've been curious, I encourage you to trust that curiosity.
