5 Breathwork Techniques to Calm Your Nervous System

Back to Blog

Your breath is always with you — and it's one of the most powerful tools you have for regulating your nervous system. When we're stressed, our breathing becomes shallow and rapid, signaling danger to the body. By consciously changing how we breathe, we can activate the parasympathetic nervous system and invite calm back in.

Here are five techniques I teach in my classes and recommend to my private clients:

1. Extended Exhale Breathing

The simplest and most accessible technique. Inhale for a count of 4, then exhale for a count of 6 or 8. By making the exhale longer than the inhale, you directly stimulate the vagus nerve and signal safety to your nervous system. Try this for 2-3 minutes whenever you feel anxious or overwhelmed.

2. Box Breathing (Sama Vritti)

Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, exhale for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts. This square pattern creates a rhythm that anchors your attention and calms racing thoughts. It's the technique used by Navy SEALs for a reason — it works under pressure.

3. Alternate Nostril Breathing (Nadi Shodhana)

This traditional pranayama technique balances the left and right hemispheres of the brain. Using your thumb and ring finger, alternate closing each nostril as you breathe. Even 5 minutes of this practice can shift your entire state.

4. Physiological Sigh

Discovered by neuroscientists at Stanford, this is the fastest way to calm down in real-time. Take a double inhale through the nose (one regular breath, then a short "sip" of air on top), followed by a long exhale through the mouth. Even one cycle can reduce stress.

5. Humming Bee Breath (Bhramari)

Close your ears with your thumbs, gently close your eyes, and hum on each exhale. The vibration of humming stimulates the vagus nerve and creates a deeply soothing internal sensation. This is especially helpful for anxiety and insomnia.

Start with just one technique and practice it daily for a week. You'll be amazed at how something so simple can transform how you feel.
